At Pharmasave we are committed to an understanding and caring approach to those experiencing a diagnosis of breast cancer. Following are some frequently asked questions regarding breast prosthesis and fittings:
Will people be able to tell if I am wearing a prosthesis?
With a proper fit, no one will be able to tell you are wearing a prosthesis.
How soon may I be fitted after breast surgery?
Usually about six weeks after surgery. It may be longer if you experience swelling or slow healing. Always check with your physician first.
May I wear a prosthesis while swimming or in a hot tub?
Yes, you may wear a prosthesis in swimming pools, or salt water. It is important to wash off the prosthesis with mild soap and water after swimming. Most prostheses may be worn in hot tubs but you should check with your fitter prior to buying your prosthesis.
Why should I wear a prosthesis?
- Keeps posture balanced
-
Renews confidence & self esteem
- Protects your chest
-
Enables you to wear the same type of clothes you were used to wearing prior to surgery
-
Helps prevent shoulder drop & may prevent neck or back pain
May I be fitted for a breast form wearing the bras I have always worn?
In some cases, yes, depending on the style and type of bra. A mastectomy bra is specially designed with two pockets sewn in to secure the prosthesis and give you a sense of security.
If I have one breast smaller than the other from birth or reconstruction, is there anything I can do?
Yes, there is a variety of silicone shells on the market that can enhance your shape.
How long does a prosthesis last?
Most prostheses have a two year warranty. A form
can last this long depending on care and use. Some medical plans may replace prostheses every year.
How much does a prosthesis cost?
Prostheses can range from $220.00 to $400.00 depending on style, warranty and manufacturer. Nova Scotia Medical Services Insurance (msi) pays $150.00 every two years to any patient regardless of age. Private insurance may also pay for both prostheses and bras but you should check with your insurer prior to purchase.
Does a prosthesis require a lot of care?
It is recommended that your prosthesis be washed in warm water and mild soap after every wearing. Rinse thoroughly. Pat dry. Allowing bath powders, perspiration, body acids, oils, perfumes, etc. to build up on the product for an extended period of time reduces the life of the product. All jewelry should be removed from your hands before handling the prosthesis.
When wearing your prosthesis, place name tags or jewelry on the bodice of your clothing before you dress. A small pin-point puncture could go unnoticed for a period of time before the skin of the prosthesis weakens enough to split the form. Take care when playing with pets as claws can puncture the prosthesis.
Store the prosthesis in the original box as it can be damaged if stored in a drawer. Temporary repair kits are available.
Is an appointment necessary?
Not always, but it is recommended to ensure the fitter is available.
Can I wear my prosthesis home the day of my fitting?
Yes, if your proper size is in stock. We carry a wide range of inventory.
Does my medical plan pay for a bra and prosthesis?
All medical plans are different, however most will pay for a prosthesis. Some pay every year and others every two years. As well, some plans pay for bras and others do not.
What if I don't have a medical plan?
MSI will pay $150 every two years and you would be required to pay the balance. Some retail stores may allow you to set up an account to help make payments easier.
Will a weight gain or loss affect my prosthesis size?
A small change in weight (5-10 pounds) should not make a difference. If you are planning to gain or lose weight, discuss this with your fitter and she will be able to make suggestions.
